The Dark Horse Social Club

We are heartbroke to announce that The Dark Horse Social Club is permanently closed. Staffing has always been a huge challenge and we wound up working as servers, bussers, barbacks and everything else more often than not. When we were in an automobile accident October 24th, we were no longer able to work actively in the restaurant. We closed for January and February hoping to either find a STRONG manager with tons of experience, a new owner or someone to put their own “thing” in. Lots of interest, but nothing moved forward. The food license came up for renewal March 1st which kind of forced us to make a decision. We decided to rip off the bandaid and call it quits. We so appreciate our many loyal customers and cherish the wonderful moments spent and memories made with you all. Thank you for being such a wonderful part of our lives this past four years.

We are NOT interested in listing the building with a realtor at this time. We are open to entertain well founded ideas.

Update: March 6, 2026 - You've probably heard by now this was precipitated when a Door Dash Driver turned in front of us the night of the Halloween Parade on East Second Street October 24th. I slid right under the lap belt and hit my knees on the dash. I was taken by squad to the ER. Mark braced for the impact on the steering wheel with his left arm and it tore his rotator cuff. Over $19,000 damage to our Suburban and totaled the other car. Mark had his six week post op follow up today (rotator cuff) and doc says he can lift up to 2 pounds with his left arm now! He can also take his sling off more often. He was and is supposed to have it on ALL the time when out and about. We've come up with many "how many men to screw in a lightbulb" jokes as Mark can't do that right now; or put on a switchplate cover, or change batteries in the smoke detector, or... well, you get the picture. My knees are better. My main issue is a contusion to the nerves under my knee caps and, I'm told, that just takes alot of time. Tonight is the first time I've been able to sit with the laptop on my lap for any amount of time, but as I type, I feel the burning starting up again, but much milder. I couldn't even hold our 5 month old grandson on my lap at Christmas without pain. I do OK now if I'm just puttering around the house and I am so grateful for that! I can now make it through TWO stores to run errands and do the shopping. I really have to try to limit my steps and I rely HEAVILY on the shopping cart. I've even had to resort to a handicap placard and the scooter at Lowe's twice. Let me tell you, those scooters are NOT easy to use. I now know to give a wide berth to those using them. And there are no cart returns anywhere near the handicapped parking spaces, and I feel like such a slug not putting the cart somewhere, but walking it back to the store or the cart corral defeats the purpose of limiting steps! Ugh. We are staying positive that we will make a complete recovery, but realistically, it will probably be a couple of more months until we can do what we used to do just 5 months ago at The Dark Horse. On a brighter note, we are looking forward to a new grandaughter in just a couple of weeks and have at least 3 visits line up with our Boston daughter between April and August.

Do you have a gift card? Farm to Table

Farm to Table meets Old World Europe. That is the vibe we work for at The Dark Horse Social Club. Not unlike the neighborhood social clubs of centuries past, the Dark Horse offers a gathering place in Defiance’s Historic Downtown. Surrounded by historic architecture and quaint neighborhoods and walking distance to shops and many historic sites, The Dark Horse is a beautiful gem nestled into a calm, quiet corner of a bustling city. We offer as fresh ingredients as possible. Locally farmed beef, artisanal meats and cheeses, whole romaine lettuce (not chemically treated), local jams and many homemade sauces. We make quiche nearly every day. Many of our soups are also made in house. Our flatbreads come in at under 30 carbs. We make our own red and white sauces and always feature a seasonal flavor! Most of our customers leave telling us they felt like they were on vacation. They just can’t believe “this is Defiance!” But it is Defiance! We love this place and we think you will too!
